Basic Instincts

(H) Be What You Want To Be: It's Time To Be Free

Mention the word "freedom" and almost every person on earth would wholeheartedly agree that freedom is a necessity. What most of us mean by this is freedom from something or freedom to do something. Children are always looking for opportunities to get free of rules laid down by their parents. Adults want more freedom in their relationships, while older people want freedom from disease, insecurities and loneliness. But what is true freedom?

True freedom is none of these things. True freedom means the power to be really you. Every one of us is unique, with our own basic personality, wants, desires, likes and dislikes. The sum total of all these makes us what we are. However, few of us are lucky enough to be in control of internal and external circumstances to be able to express our true selves. So we could end up being what we're not. Family and society, friends and colleagues create circumstances -- albeit perhaps with good intentions -- that condition us, often forcing us to do or become what we are not. Invariably, it suits many of us too, to be what others want us to be, rather than to be ourselves.

A child who is well mannered and well behaved gets appreciated and rewarded, while one, who is rebellious, gets scolded and punished. In order to gain approval from others and to get rewarded, children automatically start playing roles which are different from their true selves. In this way, right from childhood, we lose our freedom to be ourselves, and become what others want us to be.

This situation could create plenty of conflicts and turmoil in us. When there is a mismatch between what we truly want to do or say, and what we are forced to, it results in stress. And stress, as is scientifically proven, acts on our body and mind, producing a lot of psychosomatic diseases. As an adult, when we suffer from chronic problems like headache, backache, acidity, hypertension, fatigue or diabetes, we seek medical attention, often not knowing that the root cause of these problems is our lack of freedom to be ourselves and to express ourselves freely. Medical science often treats the symptoms or the end results, without going into the metaphysical aspects of the disease. As a result, most treatments are lifelong, and although many of the diseases are controlled or cured at the symptom level, the cause which gave rise to these problems persists.

So let's give ourselves absolute or total freedom, to think, to speak and to do what we really want to. This does not mean becoming selfish or license to cause injury to others. On the contrary, a person who values his freedom will immediately realise the value of others' freedom. Absolute freedom means freedom for all. It means giving up controlling ourselves and controlling others. Once we have given ourselves total freedom, we need to think what we really want, how to go about it, and at what cost we want it. And having given the whole thing a lot of thought with our free mind, we can choose the correct action. When we think with a mind that is not free, when we are worried about what others will think or say about us, when we are always playing to the gallery, we might give some happiness to others, but we will find ourselves under duress, and so will never know peace and joy.

THE NEW ORDER

Well, wait for the day when we all will have no borders whatsoever, anywhere in the world. And the entire mankind will be one Big United Family, and no Political gimmick and No pseudo Democracy, hence no vote bank either. Cos, God never made boundaries, it is us who created it, and now waste a hell lot of money on unnecessary army expenses. Still, the soldiers are so poorly paid that no one wants to join the Army anymore these days. And its not me who's saying it, even before Modern world existed, we taught the world "Vasudheva Kuttumbakkam". It makes me sad to see how people are confined and content in their own respective wells, as frogs do, and literally no one gives a darn about the country we live in. Those pseudo patriots who keep on shouting "Amar Shonar Bangla", or "Aamchi Mumbai", or "Sapadam Illey" or "Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo" forget the sheer naked fact that the entire nation is ours. And then you crib when you go out of the well and the rest of the world mocks your accent or poor knowledge of the National Language. In my view, the Ones who can't converse in the National Language doesn't deserve to be a citizen of India. Big deal if its our Home Minister PC Chiddu or Momota Banerjee, or Karunanidhi or Jayalalitha Amma, for that matter!

Tory MP calls for countryside windfarm 'bribes'

Posted 1 day ago by Missing-user-75 kimtopps to kimtopps's posterous

Tim Yeo says government needs be more creative in finding places where onshore wind turbines are acceptable

Communities need to be "bribed" to accept more windfarms in the countryside, a Conservative MP has said.

Tim Yeo, chair of the Commons energy and climate change select committee, said onshore windfarms needed to be encouraged, after it was revealed that the government wants to slash subsidies.

"We do have to work harder to find places where wind turbines are acceptable and be more creative about sharing the benefits with locals," Yeo said. "Frankly, we need to bribe them."

The Observer revealed on Sunday that the Treasury wants cuts of 25% in subsidies given to onshore turbines, a move critics derided as pandering to the 100 Conservative MPs who demanded cuts from David Cameron in February.

The MPs' position has been backed by Lincolnshire county council, which wants to ban wind turbines from being built within 10km of any settlement of 10 or more houses. The council's leader, Martin Hill, told the BBC's Today programme: "We're not going to say we aren't going to have any more windfarms. But I don't think we want the whole county to be covered by a forest of them."

Yeo said cutting financial support for windfarms and making them harder to erect did not make economic sense. "The cost of onshore wind is about half that of offshore wind," he said. "If you want to cut down the cost, slow down the rate of offshore wind development, not onshore."

Yeo said new nuclear power stations, which he supports, would take a long time to build. "We can decarbonise now, or much more expensively in the 2020s. Onshore wind is a quick and fairly easy win."

Subsidies for renewable energy, which the government sees as essential to tackling global warming and securing a sustainable energy supply, are added to home energy bills. These have soared in recent years, mainly due to rises in the global gas prices. Yeo said: "If we shut down all the onshore wind in the country, families would save just £6 a year."

A poll for the Independent shows that two-thirds of people in the UK believe more wind turbines is an acceptable price to pay for more green energy. The findings back those of a poll for the Guardian in March, in which 60% of people said they would support new windfarms in their area, compared with 20% for a coal-fired power station and 24% for a new nuclear power station. The Guardian poll also showed the debate had polarised since 2010, with the number of people strongly opposed to windfarms tripling to 21%.

Less than 10% of renewable energy in the UK is owned by individuals or communities, compared with over 65% in Germany, where four times as much clean power is produced. Rainer Hinrichs-Rahwles, head of Germany's renewable energy federation, said: "The UK system excluded those people who would have to see the turbines from their financial benefits."

I cannot watch another child killed in Syria

Dear friends,

This picture shows the bloodied bodies of dozens of innocent children, brutally murdered by the Syrian regime. As a parent, these images are almost unbearable, but I know we must not look away -- and that we can help end this slaughter. Our governments are deciding what to do right now. But they will settle for hand wringing diplomacy unless we demand firm action. Sign the urgent petition to send in thousands of UN monitors to protect the Syrian people in every region now:

Sign the petition
The pictures from Al Houla, Syria, last Friday are almost too brutal to look at. I have a 5 year old daughter and I know it's only luck of birth that separates her from this horror. But my shock led me to write this today as I know there is something we can all do together to stop this

Dozens of children lie covered with blood, their faces show the fear they felt before death, and their innocent lifeless bodies reveal an unspeakable massacre. These children were slaughtered by men under strict orders to sow terror. Yet all the diplomats have come up with so far is a few UN monitors 'observing' the violence. Now, governments across the world are expelling Syrian ambassadors, but unless we demand strong action on the ground, they will settle for these diplomatic half-measures.

The UN is discussing what to do right now. If there were a large international presence across Syria with a mandate to protect civilians, we could prevent the worst massacres while leaders engage in political efforts to resolve the conflict. I cannot see more images like these without shouting from the rooftops. But to stop the violence, it is going to take all of us, with one voice, demanding protection for these kids and their families. Click to call for UN action now and send this to everyone

http://www.avaaz.org/en/syria_will_the_world_look_away_c/?vl

A child's death is tragic in any circumstance. The UN says 108 people were killed in the onslaught, 49 of them children under the age of 10, and the youngest was a 2 year old girl. 90% of the population of Al Houla has now fled their homes. As I put my daughter to bed last night, I tried to consider what the mothers and fathers and grandparents of these children feel. The sheer pain and desperation is unimaginable, but there will also be deep anger and hate for those that did this. Until all of us stop these attacks on the people of Syria, the cycle of violence will not end.

Let's not forget -- this bloodbath began over a year ago with thousands of people peacefully protesting on the streets -- calling, like their brothers and sisters across the region, for freedom and democracy. But the regime responded with brutality and violence -- murdering, torturing, abducting and laying siege to entire cities. The international community did not intervene, letting geopolitical concerns obstruct our responsibility to protect. Then, in desperation to protect their families and fight back against the repression, some took up arms. Now it is an armed conflict -- and if the world continues to do nothing it will become a full blown sectarian war that may last for generations and breed the kind of terrorist attacks we have yet to imagine in our worst nightmares.

When dozens of children are murdered in cold blood by the army and their militias -- it is time for serious action. Assad, his henchmen and his murderous army must be held to account and the people of Syria protected. Nothing the international community has done yet has pried Assad from his murderous grip on power. The few UN monitors on the ground were powerless to stop the Al Houla killings -- they only served to count the tiny bodies. But if we sent in hundreds of monitors to each of the fourteen regions of Syria, Assad's assassins would think twice.

The world looked away with Srebrenica, and with Rwanda. If all of us respond today -- we can make sure that these children's tragic deaths act as the tipping point for all of us everywhere to say NO MORE! But if we turn away, so will our leaders. Let's join voices from every corner of the earth and make it impossible for our leaders to ignore our cry. In respect for these dear children and their families, click to join the global call to demand a massive UN presence on the ground now!

http://www.avaaz.org/en/syria_will_the_world_look_away_c/?vl

The Avaaz community has stood with the people of Syria for fifteen months, denouncing the Syrian regime, calling for sanctions, supporting communities across the country with aid, and giving equipment to citizen journalists to get the word out about the violence. Let's today make the Al Houla massacre the watershed moment for change and insist that our governments no longer stand by shaking their heads and turning their backs.

With deep sadness and determination,

Alice and the whole Avaaz team
