How diversity in the office can increase productivity

There's lots of reasons why diversity is good for the workplace, but what you may not consider is that diversity can actually be good for productivity. Open Forum offers several reasons. Here's just one:

Be a talent hunter. Imagine having a reputation for being a talent hunter, for being known as the type of leader who walks into a room and looks for what's right with people. Extensive research has proven that focusing on enhancing people's talents rather than eliminating their weaknesses is the most direct route to individual and organizational improvements. A primer for this is Marcus Buckingham's and Donald O. Clifton's book, Now, Discover Your Strengths, which helps readers identify their talents and build on their strengths as a way to boost performance. Talents are defined as people's naturally recurring patterns of thought, feeling or behavior that can be productively applied. The book also provides access to StrengthsFinder, a Web-based assessment that helps you identify the five most powerful signature themes, or talents, for you and your team.

When we shackle people with labels of what they are not good at, we diminish their confidence in their ability to succeed. Resolve to view your people as a reservoir of talent rather than a problem to be fixed. As Peter F. Drucker once said: "Nobody ever commented, for example, that the great violinist Jascha Heifetz probably couldn't play the trumpet very well."

Historical figures who just wouldn't die

Death may be the great equalizer, but sometimes it takes a little longer to equalize some folks. Cracked offers seven historical personnages who just refused to die. For example:

Trotsky was denied entry into the U.S. and eventually found his way to a home in Mexico City. It was there that he was attacked by Ramon Mercader, an assassin working for Stalin.

While Trotsky was home reading some sh*t, Mercader buried an ice axe into the back of his skull.

This just pissed Trotsky off.

He stood up from his desk, axe in head, and spit on Mercader. Then he went after the assassin, wrestling with him. Trotsky's bodyguards heard the commotion (where the f*ck were they a few minutes ago?) and came running in to subdue the assassin and get Trotsky to the hospital.

Biggest challenges for leaders to overcome

Once you claw your way to the top, you may be tempted to think you're done. You made it, that's it. Time to kick back. Right?

Wrong. Entrepreneur highlights top challenges leaders have to overcome. For example:

Challenge No. 1: Hiring the right people -- and keeping them Many first-time leaders make regretful hiring decisions early on. They choose people too much like themselves when what they really need are employees with complementary skills. They also sometimes recruit people who may have the right skills but lack solid values.

Tom Sullivan, founder and chairman of Lumber Liquidators, a Toano, Va.-based hardwood floor retailer, learned his lesson the hard way. When expanding operations beyond his first store in the Boston area, he needed store managers and truck drivers in other cities, but some of his earliest hires didn't pan out.

One store manager admitted to stealing money from the cash register, which he later repaid. Then there was the truck driver who disappeared on his first delivery, taking both the truck and the cash he had collected. "The biggest thing was getting people you could trust," says Sullivan, 52, now chairman of the 2,000-employee public company. He didn't do enough due diligence at first, but after those experiences, he quickly began conducting background checks on all new employees.

Why the media is ignoring your business

Owning a business is a bit like being in high school; it’s uncomfortable asking for attention, but you desperately need it. In the business world, however, you can’t just join the football team. You’ve got to figure out why you’re being ignored. Startup Nation gives you some reasons why the media is ignorning your company. For example:

You don’t care about them.

When you contact a media member, you’ve got to think about what’s in it for them and provide information they can actually use. If you simply talk about how great your business is and all the product features you have to offer, you will hear crickets chirping or a dial tone.

However, if you think about how you can offer valuable information to a media member that he or she can actually use, you’ll be more likely to from a lasting relationship with that person. By creating a reputation of always providing interesting and current information, over time, media members will want to call you for future stories.

NatureWorks, the bio-plastics market company with its commercial range of Ingeo biopolymers, and BioAmber, have created AmberWorks, a joint venture to bring new performance bio-based polymer compositions to market.

The joint venture builds on the natural synergy that exists between NatureWorks and BioAmber. Beyond its Ingeo PLA technology platform, NatureWorks brings to the joint venture a global commercial presence, established customer relationships, developed applications across a breadth of industries and deep experience in commercialising new-to-the-world polymers.

BioAmber owns PLA/PBS compounding intellectual property and applies award-winning biotechnology and chemical processing to produce renewable chemicals. These renewable chemicals deliver high-performance, low-carbon-footprint building blocks that are cost competitive with their petrochemical equivalents. The joint venture combines the best of both companies into an entity tasked with developing a new family of bio-based compounded polymer solutions.

With the formation of the joint venture, NatureWorks plans to commercialise a new family of compounded Ingeo resin grades, and is immediately offering samples of developmental grades aimed at thermoforming and injection-molding processes. This new family of developmental Ingeo compounded resins is designed for food service ware applications, expanding the Ingeo property range in terms of flexibility, toughness, heat resistance, and drop-in processability on existing manufacturing equipment.

Based on market interest, further formulated solutions optimised for a number of different applications beyond food service will be assessed over the coming 12-24 months.

Compounded PLA/PBS resin grades, developed and manufactured by AmberWorks, will be marketed exclusively through the NatureWorks global commercial organisation as new and distinct solutions within the company?s Ingeo portfolio of products.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance in 3D ? review

Posted 1 day ago by Missing-user-75 kimtopps to kimtopps's posterous

Like this post

Johnny Blaze might have added an extra dimension, but he's lacking engine power this time

The first Ghost Rider had Nicolas Cage zooming enjoyably about the place as Johnny Blaze, a flaming demon on his mighty motorbike, collecting damned souls for Satan ? his side of a bargain he once sealed with the Evil One who undertook to cure his dad's cancer. Now Blaze is back for more throbbing daemonic adventures in 3D; he briefly reminds us of the fact that he did all this for his ailing father, but just as before, his dad's subsequent existence is of absolutely zero interest. There's less engine power in this sequel, and the original's healthy, dark humour is in short supply. Hinds plays the devilish figure of Roarke, whose intense, scary face makes him look a lot like Harry Grout, the gangster-inmate in TV's Porridge. The strangest part of this film is a quick montage showing the various historic and mythic incarnations of evil: there's Idi Amin in there, and Stalin ? but no Hitler, and the big ironic showstopper is a huge picture of Jerry Springer. Not exactly topical, not precisely hilarious and, presumably, not technically libellous. Time for this rider to head off into the sunset.

Happiness breeds success (not the other way around), and this article shows how remarkably easy and quick it is to cultivate a positive mind-set. What can you do to make yourself happier? Count your blessings; help other people; look on the bright side of stress. Sixty years after the publication of The Power of Positive Thinking, research confirms that Norman Vincent Peale was right all along.
